House Calls and Clinic Visits on Maine’s Casco Bay Islands

With stories ranging from hilarious to heart breaking, Dr. Radis will bring the listener along on clinic visits and into the homes of his island friends and neighbors.

After completing medical school and an internal medicine residency, the young doctor moved his family to Peaks Island off the coast of Maine to fulfill a scholarship obligation. Absent-minded and oblivious to island mores, he adapted to a medical practice where x-rays and advanced lab were available only on the mainland. In addition to his clinic duties on Peaks and Chebeague Islands, he traveled year-round by boat to the outer islands and logged more than 100 yearly house calls.

In a career which spans island medicine to rheumatology, from public health work in a UN refugee settlement to advocacy for Medicare for all, Dr. Radis’ writings focus on the importance of empathy and kindness in patient care.

His first book, Go by Boat, and the recently released, Island Medicine, have been described as a blend of James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small meets Doc Martin.
