Proprietor Shares
The Salem Athenaeum was incorporated in 1810 with Proprietors as original shareholders. Since 1959, the Salem Athenaeum has operated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit open to a broader membership and governed by a Board of Trustees.
Today our Proprietors are highly invested members and donors who contribute to the governance of the organization and support it at a higher giving level. Each new Proprietor’s name is added to the ‘lineage’ of his or her share.
Shares occasionally become available for new Proprietors. For these, there is a one-time donation of $500 and then Proprietors pay an annual assessment, currently $350, to support the Athenaeum. Many Proprietors additionally support the Athenaeum through our annual Conservation Evening, Annual Fund, Gala, and as Patrons of special events and programs.
Please contact Executive Director Jean Marie Procious at 978.744.2540 or staff@salemathenaeum.net for details about being added to the Proprietor waiting list.
