Join us at 370 Essex St.\, Lower Level.\nFor centuries the folklore of the Swiss Alps has captured the imagination: cautionary tales and legends of castles and deep alpine forests where giants roam freely and large black-furred hounds lurk in wait for unsuspecting villagers walking home. Explore this otherworldly era with us in the Athenaeum garden. \nAs part of their U.S. book launch\, Rachel TonThat and Tobias Bärtsch will be reading from their project\, Die Alp an sich\, a bilingual collection that translates folklore from the Sarganserland region in eastern Switzerland into English and high German for the first time. Aida Feng\, Visiting Assistant Professor of German at the College of the Holy Cross\, will moderate the discussion.\n \nFollowing their readings\, Aida Feng\, Visiting Assistant Professor of German at the College of the Holy Cross\, will moderate a discussion TonThat and Bärtsch will discuss the reframing of these tales\, the evolution of the project\, and the shift from a simple translation project into a feminist and environmentally conscious engagement with the source materials. They will address the problematic legacy of legend collecting in Switzerland where male collectors have framed themselves as rescuers of an “authentic” oral tradition\, while producing moralizing texts that have erased the voices of their largely female\, working-class storytellers. \n \nRachel TonThat is an interdisciplinary artist and writer working with narrative structures around themes of possible futures\, memory\, and space-time. She is co-founder of the social art and publishing project\, Oreades Press\, and curates the project space Airtight Garage. She was selected for the inaugural She Who Has No Master(s) writing mentorship through the Diasporic Vietnamese Artist Network and completed her MA Fine Art at Zurich University of the Arts. Her work has been supported by the city of Zurich\, Canton St. Gallen\, New England Foundation For the Arts\, Mass Cultural Council\, Collective Futures Fund\, Tin House Writing Workshop\, Fondation Jan Michalski\, and more. Her essays and art criticism have appeared in Diacritics\, The Amp\, and Boston Art Review. \nTobias Bärtsch is a Swiss-Polish artist and writer based in Zurich\, Switzerland. His interdisciplinary practice spans various media\, often beginning with text. In 2024\, he participated in the group exhibition Uncanny Unchained at Kunsthalle St. Gallen. He wrote for various publications\, such as PW Magazine and transversal texts. His work has been supported by the Canton of St. Gallen through a Werkbeitrag grant in 2024. \nAida Feng is a scholar and teacher of German Studies whose work centers language and experience at the intersection of literature and German critical thought in the long 20th century. She completed her Ph.D. at Yale University with a dissertation on techniques of description (Beschreibung) that reconfigure the structure of possible experience in Walter Benjamin\, Robert Musil\, Ernst Mach\, Ludwig Wittgenstein\, and Ingeborg Bachmann. SUMMARY:From a Drop of Blood to a World of Data: Is Public Health Ready for Genomic Newborn Sequencing?
DESCRIPTION:Newborn screening is one of public health’s great success stories — a routine heel-stick test that has saved countless lives since its introduction in the 1960s. Today\, every infant born in the United States is screened for approximately 40 conditions on the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). \nAdvances in whole genome sequencing now raise a compelling possibility: that a single genomic test\, performed at birth\, could identify nearly 800 treatable genetic conditions before a child ever shows symptoms. BEACONS-NBS (Building Evidence and Collaboration for GenOmics in Nationwide Newborn Screening) is a multi-institutional\, NIH-funded research program dedicated to studying whether genomic newborn screening can be implemented feasibly\, equitably\, and responsibly within existing U.S. public health infrastructure. Spanning seven states and territories — Oregon\, Texas\, Minnesota\, Iowa\, New York\, South Carolina\, and Puerto Rico — the program aims to enroll up to 30\,000 newborns\, while rigorously evaluating the scientific\, programmatic\, and human dimensions of large-scale genomic screening. This includes developing consent processes\, clinical decision-support tools\, specialist referral pathways\, and frameworks for communicating complex results to families and healthcare providers alike. \nThis presentation offers an overview of the BEACONS-NBS program — its scientific goals\, its ethical commitments\, and what its findings could mean for the future of preventive medicine and child health in the United States. \nVilma Kodyte\, MS is a Research Assistant with the Genomes2People research group based at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She supports projects spanning clinical ethics and genomics\, contributing specifically to the BEACONS-NBS project\, investigating the implementation of whole genome sequencing into newborn screening\, and the PRISM project within the MAGen Consortium\, developing frameworks to guide the ethical development of machine learning models aiming to predict disease manifestation. Her work focuses on the ethical\, clinical\, and translational challenges of integrating genomic information into patient care across reproductive and pediatric care settings\, with particular emphasis on data interpretation\, responsible communication\, and equity in precision medicine. She supports the development of tools and frameworks to guide clinicians and patients in navigating complex genomic results and emerging technologies. She holds a B.A. in Biochemistry from Reed College and a M.S. in Bioethics from Harvard Medical School. \nThis is a hybrid event.
