powerofnumbers_coverThis year’s Salem History Lecture will be presented by Tamara Thornton, author of the recently published Nathaniel Bowditch and the Power of Numbers.

Thomas Jefferson once called Nathaniel Bowditch a “meteor in the hemisphere.” This son of Salem was a mathematician, astronomer, navigator, seafarer, and business executive whose Enlightenment-inspired perspectives shaped 19th-century capitalism and transformed American life. Author Tamara Thornton examines Bowditch’s path-breaking approaches to business, science and social elites in the early republic.

Books will be available for sale and signing by the author.  Cash or checks only.

Co-presented by Historic Salem, Inc. and Salem Athenaeum.
