Ahoy, book lovers! Salem Lit Fest and Real Pirates Salem have joined forces for an event that only a scurvy dog would miss!
New York Times-bestselling author Katherine Howe will discuss her two latest books, A True Account: Hannah Masury’s Sojourn Amongst the Pyrates, Written by Herself (Nov. 2023) and The Penguin Book of Pirates (April 2024) in the Treasure Room of the Real Pirates Salem museum.
The gangway opens at 6pm for a tour of Real Pirates Salem, which includes the world’s only fully authenticated pirate treasure, discovered from a ship wrecked more than 300 years ago of off Cape Cod. Once ye get yer sea legs, we’ll gather ‘round in the museum’s Treasure Room for tales of tars and treachery with Katherine Howe!

Katherine Howe is a New York Times bestselling and award-winning historian and novelist. She is the author of several novels for adults and young adults, has edited two volumes of primary sources for Penguin Classics, and is the co-author with Anderson Cooper of the #1 New York Times bestselling books Vanderbilt and Astor.
Katherine has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “CBS This Morning,” NPR’s “Weekend Edition,” the BBC, the History Channel, Smithsonian TV, the Travel Channel, and she hosted “Salem: Unmasking the Devil” for National Geographic. Her fiction has been translated into over twenty languages. She holds a BA in art history and philosophy from Columbia and an MA in American and New England studies from Boston University. A native Houstonian and avid sailor, she lives in New England with her family, where she is at work on her next book. One time, as a child, she looked up into the eye of a hurricane. She also puts hot sauce on everything.
About Salem Literary Festival
The Salem Lit Fest aims to inspire and promote literacy and a love of books and reading by both featuring contemporary authors and engaging with classic works of literature. The festival is held each September, with special events at other times of year. In 2023, the One Book, One Salem community read and Enduring Hawthorne were added to the festival line-up.
The Salem Athenaeum is the presenting sponsor and coordinator of the Salem Lit Fest, in partnership with Salem Public Library, and other Salem organizations. A committee of book-loving volunteers makes it possible.
