Library Intern, The Salem Athenaeum

The Salem Athenaeum is seeking two paid library interns to support collections access, preservation, and promotion. This internship is funded through the Future Leaders Internship Program and is restricted to applicants between the ages of 15-20. Current high school students, library school students, or individuals with demonstrated work/volunteer experience or interest in libraries are invited to apply. This summer position will provide paid, on-the-job experience.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Library Intern will help catalog and arrange historical materials, help promote the collections to the public via displays, articles, social medias, etc., and help ensure the library is a welcoming, service-oriented place. The intern will have the opportunity to assist with collection management, circulation, public programs, and other projects of interest.

This position will run from May through August 31, 2024, for 8-10 hours per week for each position, in two shifts of either 4 or 5 hours each, during library hours, Tuesday-Friday 11-6 and Saturday 11-4.

The primary responsibilities are: cataloging; book and manuscript processing; creating library displays; help with circulation and book shelving; other duties as assigned.  Additional responsibilities based on interest and knowledge level may include: provide reference services to members and the public; creating finding guides; writing articles and social media content.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have: strong interest in libraries, history, or literature; previous experience working in a library; ability to establish effective and collaborative working relationships with students and colleagues; appropriate technology skills to accomplish job responsibilities; strong organizational and time management skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; must be able to work intuitively and independently.
