Salem Art Days Event
The Athenaeum Art Collection Guided Tour
June 2 at 4:00 p.m. or
June 3 at 1:00 p.m.
Throughout the years the Salem Athenaeum has assembled a small, but impressive, collection of paintings and sculptures through generous donations. One such collection, the Louis and Nettie Horch landscape collection, includes paintings by local and internationally known artists like Childe Hassam (1859-1935), Gustave Courbet (1819-1977), and Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823-1900). Join us for an hour-long guided tour of our art collection led by the Athenaeum’s Library Assistant, Dr. Franny Zawadzki. Franny will discuss the historical significance of the artists and art works in our collection and will place the collection within the broader history of art collecting in America.
Franny Zawadzki holds a Ph.D. in 19th century American art and visual culture from The Graduate Center, CUNY. She holds an MA in 19th century French art from Hunter College, CUNY. Her research interests include the ways in which middle-class Americans experienced art and aesthetic education in the nineteenth-century, such as through the parlor tradition of education, printed material, and other alternatives to cultural institutions.
