Coffee Tasting in the Athenaeum Garden

Join us for a conversation exploring the magical elixir that is coffee. We will discover its history, the journey from bean to cup, and delight our senses with a formal tasting of the drink that is the heartbeat of the modern world.

Jillian Rubel is a local Salem resident for the past five years. She grew up in the hub of all things coffee for the U.S. — Seattle, WA, and worked in the industry for 18 years, beginning as a barista. Her passion for coffee has brought her to compete in coffee-knowledge and tasting competitions, and on trips to origin in Costa Rica and Guatemala. There she had the opportunity to learn from farmers and local agronomists first-hand, and deepen her understanding of the current challenges facing farmers and their families. Her favorite coffees are sun-dried brewed in a French press.

Alan Sevigny is a Salem resident and began his journey in coffee 11 years ago as a barista. His love has grown with every passing year furthering his coffee education through self study and certification. A life-long learner, his passion is in exploring the art and science of new brewing methods and sharing food and coffee with others. His favorite coffees are from Guatemala and Ethiopia brewed in a cold brewer or Chemex.

This event will be outdoors in the garden.
Please bring a folding lawn chair if you have one.
