Join Salem Poet Laureate, J.D. Scrimgeour, for a workshop to help you generate writing about Salem for Pieces of Salem, an anthology of prose and poetry to celebrate Salem’s quadricentennial.
The call for submissions for Pieces of Salem: A Salem Anthology is open to anyone who has lived or worked in Salem for at least one year. You are invited to submit a piece (or pieces) of poetry or prose about your experiences living in Salem to be included in the publication. The works can be either prose or poetry, but the total number of words for all submissions must be no more than 400 words (so, for example, you could submit two poems of 200 words each).

J.D. Scrimgeour is a Professor of English at Salem State University and the author of five poetry collections, including The Last Miles and Banana Bread. His work has appeared in esteemed publications like Poetry and Ploughshares. A dedicated advocate for the arts, he helped establish the Massachusetts Poetry Festival in Salem and directs the Salem Poetry Seminar, helping future poets. Upon his appointment as poet laureate of Salem, Scrimgeour remarked, “Twenty-eight years ago, the city of Salem, rich in history and culture, welcomed me and my family. I am honored to contribute to that legacy as Poet Laureate. I thank the selection committee for their work, and I look forward to fostering a new generation of writers while celebrating our city’s quadricentennial.”
