“It was morning; through the high window I saw the pure, bright blue of the sky as it hovered cheerfully over the long roofs of the neighboring houses. It too seemed full of joy, as if it had special plans, and had put on its finest clothes for the occasion.”
– Herman Hesse
Sponsor the Tune Up, Renovation, and Full Restoration of the Athenaeum’s Windows to secure the building envelope and protect the collections.
We plan to engage experts to do a thorough restoration of each of our historic windows, including:
- Chip and remove loose, flaking glazing putty
- Replace broken panes and sash cords
- Repair any rot, weak joints, and surface damage
- Remove paint, repaint, clean, wax, and re-install
- Fabricate storm windows
Per window restoration costs range from $650 to $4,500. As funding is raised, the work on each window will take between a day and three weeks, depending on condition. The total cost of the project is up to $70,000. We have been awarded a $35,000 matching grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission’s Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund.
We need your help to match these funds! Ways to give include clicking the Donate button below or creating your own online fundraiser with our Crowdrise fundraiser or contact us directly.
Please let us know if you’d like to select a specific window to fundraise for/adopt! Contact Jean Marie Procious, Executive Director, at 978.744.2540 or info@salemathenaeum.net.
