A Paper Conservator’s 40-Year Journey through a Changing Landscape

Toddy is one of the first academically trained art conservators in the United States. Her specialty was paper: prints, drawings, watercolors, documents, and other paper based materials. Because there were few paper conservators in the U.S., she had plenty of work, much of it challenging. In those early years at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, she was hopeful that this new metier would become a profession. Eventually she became head conservator at what is now the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC), and served there for 25 years.
